SBCA  - YEAR IN REVIEW

2018

Summer has passed us by for 2018. We hope you all enjoyed our beaches and paths as well as the flowers, flags and the ocean.

It started, as always, with Flags and ended with Bench Repairs.

  1. 35 Flags were placed at the beginning of the season as the SBCA Flag Program has been doing for the last 8 years to honor our servicemen. Many flags had to be replaced due to the wind and weather.

  2. We always have a busy summer at the Docks and you can see from our pictures several of the boats that come to visit

  3. We had some damage done to our pathways from the late winter storms. Several pathways and benches were inundated with inches to FEET of sand as well as many dunes and beach front property were 'removed' by the tides.

  4. Our beach walkways were beautified by our 15 Planters. The storms caused extensive damage and many had to be replaced.  Some of our SBCA members planted, watered and cared for our many walkway  planters as we replaced and renewed the flowers and pots on our yearly schedule. The Cargill memorial and the park and Flag at the 286 intersection were maintained by our volunteers and the lawn and shrubs by our contractor.

  5. As with all things, some of our Walkway benches have aged and needed Repair/Refurbishing. This year we embarked on an extensive program to complete the remaining refurbishing of 33 benches in our care. Some of our Walkway Benches sustained damage and repairs are speedy, some had 'aged' beyond refurbish and were removed or replaced entirely. Safety is our primary concern in these circumstances.

  6. The plaques on the benches also become 'aged' due to the sun and 'sand-blasting' from the wind and beach sand.  In 2018, with the help of 2 volunteers, we completed the refurbishing of all 78 bench plaques and restored them to their original beauty and luster. An example of this damage and renewal is on our 'Bench Program' page.

  7. Sadly, our Family Day celebration was not held. There were not enough volunteers or a chair person to manage the function and activities.

  8. Volunteers are always needed for the many projects we do. Many of them do not require special skills but just a willing heart and hand. For those things that require extensive time or equipment to complete we must contract those activities to others.

  9. This year also brought the election of new officers of the SBCA. They are President - Vickie Sawyer, Vice President - Larry Deshler, Treasurer - Ed David, Membership Secretary - Peter Volpe Jr. (continuing) and Secretary - Judy David.

  10. Thanks to your membership and donations we are able to provide these and other services to continue to beautify our village district and  make it a great place to spend our summer days.

2017

It has been a busy year in 2017 for the SBCA

It started with Flags and ended with Bench Repairs.

  1. 35 Flags were placed at the beginning of the season as the SBCA Flag Program has been doing for the last 7 years to honor our servicemen

  2. We always have a busy summer at the Docks and you can see from our pictures  several of the boats that come to visit

  3. We had some damage done to our sign and some of our SBCA members took action to repair our sign and paint it anew

  4. Our beach walkways were beautified by our 15 Planters and some of our SBCA members planted, watered and cared for our many walkway  planters

  5. As years  pass by  some of our Walkway benches have aged and needed Repair/Refurbishing. We addressed 15 of the 78 Benches  in our care. Some of our Walkway Benches sustained damage and repairs are speedy. Safety is our primary concern in these circumstances.

AMERICAN FLAG PROGRAM

Run by the SBCA,  placed 35 Flags to honor our servicemen

History: The American Flag Program began in 2010 when Chuck Defrancesco brought up the idea of placing American flags along the utility poles on Ocean Boulevard. Susan Spruce was co-chair. Chuck Defrancesco ran the program until Earl Spruce took over in 2017.

To:  Town Manager Bill Manzi, Department of Public Works Manager John Starkey and all those who helped along the way,

Thank you from the entire Beach District... the American flags flying proudly  along Ocean Blvd look amazing.  And a  special thank you to  Asa Knowles IV, Brandon Moore and Bruce Felch for weathering the storm. We truly appreciate your involvement.  You made the process of placing the American flags look easy in the pouring rain.

             SBCA President,

             Phyllis Farfaras

WALKWAY BENCH PROGRAM

Weather and years catch up to us all and it is no different with our wonderful walkway benches. While many have aged gracefully, others, depending on their placement along the paths and waterfront  have not and have been discovered in need of replacement/repair and/or refurbishing.

Some of our Walkway Benches sustained minor damage and either temporary or final repairs were made quickly with little effort and low cost.  Safety is our primary concern in these circumstances prompting us to remove some of the benches . Unfortunately others may also be removed in the future.

Vickie Sawyer, has stepped down  from her Bench Coordinator position with the Seabrook Beach Civic Association.  She did an amazing job and while we will truly miss her in the role  she has held since 2014, we understand her desire to fill just one position, that of  Secretary, and to pass the other along to someone new.

While we search for a new Bench Coordinator, our  president, Phyllis Farfaras, will handle the bench program.  Anyone interested in taking over as Bench Coordinator please contact her at 617 908-0780 or Seabrookbeachcivicassoc@hotmail.com.
